I received an email the other day that started with, “My dog got kicked out of daycare today.” It was from a dog owner I knew. She loves her dog and was looking for outlets for his energy. She is a fantastic owner — the kind every dog trainer wants to meet. She was bonded to her dog, committed to his well-being, and loved to hear advice from pet professionals on how to improve her dog’s life. So she emailed me to find out what she had done wrong. She needed to express her embarrassment with her dog, and wanted to cry on my shoulder (virtually) and find out what she should be doing to fix what she viewed as her dog’s problems.

She had a lovely dog, with no behavioral problems. The dog was friendly with people, well mannered in the house, walked nicely on leash and was absolutely adored by everyone in the family. But there was this one prob...

Tonight we are mourning for Dallas and for the Law Enforcement Community in general. We are a Blue company and a Blue family. Most of our clients are involved in law enforcement in one way or another and tonight many of their spouses and children are most likely wishing they would just quit after what happened in Dallas. After seeing people celebrate the death of 5 officers and hearing stories of how cops in the line of fire were trying to protect the very people there to protest them, even I don’t see why anyone would want to put that uniform back on and face that kind of ignorant hatred. But they do. So many of our friends and family members did just that today because they believe in doing what’s right and protecting those they swore to protect.

It is a coincidence that we are donating 10% of our sales this month to a cause that suppor...

During the month of March 2016, we will be donating 10% of our sales to help Denver Police Officer Alicia Harris make her goal of $1500 to ride in the Law Enforcement United’s Annual Memorial Bike Ride, “The Road To Hope.”

The "Road To Hope" helps families of police officers, killed in the line of duty, know that they are not alone. It funds resources like Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) and the Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP) to help these families rebuild and to preserve the memories and honor their fallen hero.

I had the opportunity to participate in a similar ride, The Police Unity Tour, in 2011. The ride itself, the ceremony at the Law Enforcement Memorial in DC, and meeting the family of the fallen officer, for whom I rode, were some of the most humbling and life changing experiences I’ve ever had. So, when we can, we w...

Many of our clients use us because they have reactive (often mistakenly called “aggressive”) dogs and we LOOOOVE reactive dogs!! Why would we love a dog that acts like it wants to murder the thing it reacts to? Because we know those sweet babies are misunderstood and we know how to handle fears that present themselves as aggression.

What We Understand About Reactive Dogs:

Dogs react negatively to different things for different reasons, but mainly because they previously had a bad experience with whatever it is to which they are reacting. In an effort to keep this as short as possible, I will talk about dogs reacting to other dogs. Even though many dogs react to things such as children, skateboarders, motorcycles, horses, men, sunglasses, hats, any human besides it’s mom or dad, etc.

It’s Really About Fear:
Every dog we have loved and...

During the month of June 2015, Happy Hound Playground will be donating 10% of our sales to help Officer Gonzo raise money for the 2015 Tour de Force Memorial Ride.

The Tour de Force incorporated in early 2003 and made it their mission to raise funds for the families of Police Officers killed in the line of duty while remembering the victims of 9/11.

Help us help Officer Gonzo (John Gonzales) raise money for the families of fallen Police Officers! (He and my dog have the same name, so of course we want to help him.)

Please pass the word so we can help Officer Gonzo raise the funds he needs to participate in this honorable event.

You can also donate directly through the link below.

My dog played with another dog!!!

That sounds like such a strange thing to be proud of but you have to hear Gonzo’s story to understand…

I met Gonzo when I was a Dog Trainer/Behavior Specialist Apprentice with the Misha May Foundation. Gonzo was a foster dog who came to one of our classes because he had severe dog aggression issues. And by “severe” I mean that he not only acted like he wanted to kill other dogs, he acted like he wanted to find their whole doggie family and kill all of them. For this, Adams County Shelter tried to get his foster mom to bring him back in to have him euthanized. Fortunately, there was no way she would have done that.

Gonzo walked into this class and immediately sat on my lap and pressed his body into my chest. We had never met before, but the dog OWNED me at that point. Arguably, that’s not hard for a dog...
